Hanoi capital city of Vietnam

Vietnam's capital

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is famous for its hundred-year-old architecture and rich culture with the influence of Southeast Asia, China, and France. The city center is the bustling old quarter, where narrow streets are named "Hang" (goods). There are many small temples, including Bach Ma, honoring a legendary horse, along with the Dong Xuan market, selling household goods and street food.

Other landmarks include the One Pillar Pagoda, a small pagoda atop a stone pillar, and the 11th Century Temple of Literature that used to be the Confucian institute. French colonial buildings are scattered throughout the city, from Neoclassical Opera House to the Cathedral. The mausoleum of later president Ho Chi Minh and the museum at Hoa Lo Prison (also known as Hanoi Hilton, the place where prisoners of war were held) recalled the Vietnam War. Cultural activities include activities from Tai Chi martial arts around Hoan Kiem Lake to traditional chamber music and water puppetry.
