The aircraft carried 245 passengers, 8 crew, and had to return to Montreal after 37 minutes of departure. Upon landing, the crew discovered the cause of the strange stench was from a durian shipment in the forward cargo compartment, according to Flight Global.

This is not the first time the smell of durian has caused problems. In 2018, passengers on a flight in Bengkulu, Indonesia, asked the crew to leave durian before departing as the plane carried about 2 tons of the fruit.

Passengers are not satisfied with the explanation from the crew that the odor will disappear after takeoff. A man began to chant protest and other passengers also said they did not want to fly. According to the BBC, some passengers were very angry and almost scuffle with the crew. In the end, the airline agreed to leave the durian batch.

Earlier this year, a library in Australia was evacuated on suspicion of a gas leak. About 500 students and teachers were evacuated from the campus of RMIT University on Latcoat Road, Melbourne. After a thorough search, firefighters determined that the strange smell was not a chemical gas, but rather from a rotten durian cupboard.

Durian is a common fruit in Southeast Asia and world famous for its extremely unpleasant smell. This fruit is banned in public places and hotels in some Asian countries.
