15km from Hue City, Tam Giang Lagoon is situated within the Tam Giang - Cau Hai Lagoon System spanning 4 districts of Thua Thien Hue Province. This is the largest freshwater lagoon in Southeast Asia, covering an area of 52km2 and 24km in length.
Before the name Tam Giang, this lagoon was called Hac Hai until 1821. Since the old days, Tam Giang used to be impoverished and dangerous open water with no roads and electricity. At present, not only does Tam Giang Lagoon become an attractive tourist destination in Hue City, but it also comprises a rich quantity of bird species, flora, fauna, and aquatic resources.
