Hurricane Season in Bermuda

Hurricane season officially begins in June and ends in November, though, given its location 900 miles north of the Caribbean Sea, Bermuda is less likely to be impacted by foul weather than one might expect. (The island doesn't even have a proper rainy season, unlike its neighbors to the south). Located roughly 650 miles off the North Carolina coast, Bermuda is actually less likely to be impacted by hurricanes and tropical storms than the eastern seaboard of the United States.

The island, a British Overseas Territory, is located in a portion of the North Atlantic Ocean nicknamed the "Bermuda Triangle." The area has become notorious for the number of missing aircraft and sunken ships that have disappeared within these waters.

That being said, travelers needn't fear any freak incidents on their flight overseas-scientists have dismissed supernatural explanations for this phenomena as nothing more than a myth.

Spring in Bermuda

Spring is the driest season of the year, and May is the driest month, with an average of 7 days of rain and 3.3 inches of rainfall. After the darker days of winter, the average daily sunshine begins to increase—averaging 6 hours per day in March and 7 hours in April and May. As a result, the spring is an ideal time for visitors to enjoy Bermuda's beauty—and swim in its waters (the average sea temperature hovers in the low 70s Fahrenheit).

What to Pack: Sunblock, rain gear, layers for the evening, breathable items during the day, light jacket, scarf, hat, Smart-casual looks for the evening (blazers, dresses, etc.) Bermuda is dressier than other islands, and certain institutions observe dress codes. (This goes for daytime as well—always bring a cover-up and sandals to change into for drinks or lunch).

Average Temperatures by Month:

March: 66 F / 62 F (19 C / 17 C)

April: 68 F / 65 F (20 C / 18 C)

May: 71 F / 69 F (22 C / 21 C)

Summer in Bermuda

Summer is the hottest, most humid, and sunniest time of year. It is also the season most popular with tourists. June is the most humid month with 82 percent humidity (July and August each average 81 percent respectively). August is the hottest month of the year (average temperature of 82 F / 28 C), and—alongside July—the sunniest, with 9 hours of sunshine per day. Summer also ushers in the year's rainier portion, with average precipitation gradually increasing throughout the season.

What to Pack: Sunblock, breathable layers for humidity, rain gear, waterproof clothing, and protective hats and visors for the sun. Lightweight, smarter attire for the evening (that won't easily wrinkle or ruin in the rain), including jackets, dresses, and sandals.

Average Temperatures by Month:

June: 76 F / 74 F (25 C / 24 C)

July: 80 F / 78 F (27 C / 26 C)

August: 81 F / 78 F (27 C / 26 C)

Fall in Bermuda

October is the wettest month of the year, with an average of 13 rainy days and 6.3 inches of precipitation. Sunshine hours will begin to decrease in November (averaging 5.5 hours per day) before dropping more in December and January (4.5 hours per day). Visitors in the fall can capitalize on cheaper travel rates and enjoy weather that feels like springtime stateside. Although the hurricane season officially begins in June and lasts until November, October is the peak month for tropical storms. Bermuda only experiences a tropical cyclone every six or seven years, but cautious travelers should still purchase hurricane insurance in advance of their autumnal trip. However, it's unlikely you will encounter an issue, particularly if arriving from the U.S.'s eastern seaboard, in which case you're more likely to encounter a tropical storm or hurricane at home than abroad.

What to Pack: Rain gear, waterproof shoes, sun protection, breathable layers for daytime, a jacket or sweater for the evening. Hooded rain jackets and rubber rain boots are recommended for hiking.

Average Temperatures by Month:

September: 80 F / 78 F (27 C / 25 C)

October: 77 F / 74 F (25 C / 24 C)

November: 73 F / 70 F (23 C / 21 C)

The ocean is slightly cooler in the winter than other times of the year, though it's certainly swimmable, with an average temperature of 72 F (22 C) in December and 68 F (20 C) in February and March. Thankfully, the rainy season subsides after the hurricane season in the fall, and visitors are likely to save money on travel costs at this time.

What to Pack: Rain gear, a wetsuit (if you're planning to surf), sunblock, light layers, a lightweight sweater, and jacket for the evening.

Average Temperatures by Month:

December: 67 F / 66 F (21 C / 19 C)
